Notes from the President—David Rice

Thanksgiving is just around the corner as I ponder what message to convey to our members. Do you remember how the holiday originated? The first winter of 1620 in the new world was brutal to the pilgrims. Nearly half of the original band died. The following harvest in 1621 was bountiful and the colonists decided to celebrate with a feast. Their guests included the Indians who had helped them survive that first year. The word “Thanksgiving” means to give thanks for divine goodness. To me it also means to give thanks to those who give. Here’s my list of Thanksgiving.

  • May 14, 2002 - the dedication of the Portage Soccer Complex. The realization of a 10-year dream to develop a home for today’s players and for generations to come.

  • The dedicated volunteers - men and women - who built our dream. Words are simply inadequate to express our appreciation for your sacrifice.

  • Our partners in the United Soccer Foundation (AYSO Region 74, River Oaks Soccer Club and AYSO Region 212, Sting Soccer Club) for trusting PSC to be good stewards of the player field development fees they invested in our complex knowing that we would return their generosity during the redevelopment of the Prairie View and River Oaks complexes.

  • AYSO Region 74 for being our development partner and the foundation for our travel soccer program.

  • All the PSC families who have made a pledge to the USF capital campaign; may your generosity be returned to you ten fold.

  • Our Board of Directors for your time, commitment and dedication on behalf of the children you represent.

  • Our Tournament Board and the many volunteers who over the years (16 and counting) work diligently to organize and operate a first class event.

  • Our past presidents - John Calnin and Bob Kucinski - for their leadership, vision and commitment to the PSC.

  • Our coaches and managers for the many hours spent with their teams. Sometimes the payback isn’t immediate; it may be ten years from now when a young adult recognizes you and says thanks for being there and that you made soccer fun.

  • Finally and most importantly, thanks for our children. Their smiles and enthusiasm whether the game was won or lost they are all winning kids! Hold them close to you - these years pass so quickly.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, best wishes for a safe, happy holiday season and a prosperous new year.

Coaches Corner - Blake Glass

Please read and fill out the Coach Evaluation Form printed on the following page. You can help our Club further raise the level of coaching by providing feedback both positive and negative. Fill out the form and mail at your earliest convenience.

As we head into the New Year, here are some thoughts guaranteed to make us better players, coaches, and parents.

New Year’s Resolutions

For players:

    1)   I will practice my ball skills (juggling, dribbling moves, control) on my own at least ten minutes a day.

    2)   I will always give my best effort at practice and games.

    3)   I will not show dissent toward a referee, no matter what is called.

    4)   I will play any position the coach puts me in without complaint.

    5)   I will always bring my soccer ball and water to practice and games.

For coaches:

    1)   I will make myself more knowledgeable about soccer by watching, listening, reading, and asking questions.

    2)   I will have a challenging and fun practice planned before I get to the field.

    3)   I will not show dissent toward a referee, no matter what is called.

    4)   I will strive to develop players first and win games second.

    4)   I will keep my manager and parents informed about all practices, games and any changes to the regularly scheduled routine.

For parents:

    1)   I will learn the rules better and strive to understand what offside really means.

    2)   I will be involved with my child’s development by kicking the ball to them when they need a partner.

    3)   I will not show dissent toward a referee, no matter what is called.

    4)   I will cheer for and encourage my child and other team members win, lose or draw.

    5)   I will get my child to practices and games on time.

Lightning Strikes in El Salvador - by Margie Stinson

I had the great fortune of being part of a delegation that went to St. Catherine’s sister community El Sitio, El Salvador in October. It is a poor farming community with 64 families nestled in the foothills of the mountains just about in the middle of El Salvador. A highlight of the trip was the night that the soccer and softball teams got to choose uniforms from all of the Portage Soccer Club, AYSO and Red Arrow donations that many of you gave. There were over 150 jerseys collected. This was enough for five complete sets of team jerseys, which outfitted every team in the village. The mismatching AYSO uniforms were given to the small children who weren’t old enough to be on a team yet. They were so proud to wear them. There were even some new Portage tournament T-shirts for the men. Every single shirt that we collected was proudly worn by someone. The teenaged girl’s softball team got shorts for the first time in their lives. They were so excited that they put them on right there on the spot! The Directiva (like a mayor) of the village, Mercedes, wanted me to share with you what a joy it was for their children to have these shirts because they don’t often get new things. It meant a lot to them that they were from our children to theirs. Thank-you!

I would like to continue to collect good used soccer uniforms and shoes throughout the seasons to come. There are many villages in El Salvador and other Central American countries where soccer and softball are the main sources of recreation in a meager existence. Uniforms bring a lot of joy to them. There are delegations going to El Salvador two or three times per year. The next one is a delegation of high school students going over Spring Break. I’m happy to collect and store your donations of soccer equipment in between delegation trips. Just give me a call at 372-2199, or drop them off in a plastic bag anytime at my house, 5212 Birchwood. Or you can drop them off at the soccer complex during the season in the box labeled ‘Uniforms for El Salvador’ right near the concession stand. Don’t let those old uniforms and shoes take up space in your closets and drawers! Let’s put them to good use.

Construction Update - by David Rice

As the fall soccer season wound down, construction activity at the soccer complex picked up. One major project to be completed was the construction of the three picnic shelters.   Volunteer crews raised the roof trusses, installed roof sheathing and shingles, aluminum soffit and fascia and vinyl siding.   The last step was the installation of the ceilings and trim.

Each of the shelters are 20’ x 24’; large enough to accommodate four picnic tables and oriented to the fields so fans can enjoy the games.

Thanks to the following volunteers who worked several weekends to complete the project: Tim Beebe, Brian Campbell, Chris Forth, Gary Gilchrest, Gordon Groves and Steve Keyte. Special thanks to John Crookston and Craig White for donating their roofing skills.

Local Businesses Step Up

By now you know how the Portage Community Soccer Complex came to be. You have read in past articles about the small group of PSC volunteers who built the dream. At the same time local businesses pitched in by donating labor and materials to the project. The following all contributed to the project.

    Cornerstone Construction Management

    Century Concrete Construction

    Frederick Construction

    Lounsbury Excavating

    McDonald’s of SW Michigan

    Overhead Door Company of Kalamazoo

    Rollie Williams Paint Spot

    Romence Gardens

    Ronnigen Research

    Soule & Company

    Woolf Excavators

Thanks for your support and generosity.

The engraved bricks will be installed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Your message may contain three lines (maximum) with up to 15 characters per line (including spaces). The price per brick is $50.  All proceeds will benefit the new Portage Community Soccer Complex.

The first group of 50 engraved bricks has been received.   A special thanks to the families who participated in this program. Look for your brick in the center circle!

Portage Soccer Classic

The Portage Soccer Classic this past June hosted more teams than the year before. Teams that came to play at the new Portage Soccer Complex were impressed with the facility and the way the tournament was run, and we hope to continue to grow this event. The tournament is planned for the weekend of June 14-15 so mark your calendars now.

AYSO Region 74 Registration

Signup for the 2003 AYSO season is planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday January 11 and Saturday January 18 at Portage Central Middle School.

Central and Northern Women’s Soccer News            David Rice

Our last issue of The Keeper went to press without recognizing the successes of the Central and Northern women’s high school teams. Both schools had excellent spring seasons led by Northern’s 21-4 record and semi-final appearance in Division II. Players from both Portage teams received many post-season honors. Lindsay Tarpley from Portage Central capped a brilliant high school career with her selection as the state’s Miss Soccer; the first time a West Michigan player has been so honored.

Do You Know Who Your Parent Rep Is?

Every PSC team has a Parent Representative who serves as liaison between club members and the PSC Board. The best way to improve our club is to provide feedback, and your Parent Rep is there for you.
